Wednesday 1 September
We're not in a hurry this morning as we are going to keep to scheduled stop of Slaidburn - now only about 23 miles away. In fact, we have phoned and booked ahead at the Youth Hostel as we don't want a repeat of yesterday and we find the pub doesn't do accommodation. Left the hotel at 10.15 and got off to a good start. There was a cycle lane on the pavement just outside the hotel which led onto the road down a small ramp. I negotiated this easily then heard a 'whump' behind me followed by an expletive which I have omitted. Peter had been checking his GPS and caught the edge of the ramp which then threw him off. No lasting damage - just a grazed finger (no, I'm not smiling - honest). Another lovely sunny day. Got onto some quiet roads before too long. Saw a second Bond Bug car of our trip. For those of you interested, Peter tells me this is a Hillman Imp engined 3 wheeler car from the 1970s. Crossed the river Ribble started to climb - and climb - and climb. We're on a different route from the itinerary to get us back on track after diverting yesterday. Came down to another river (Hodder) and spotted an old bridge downstream. Whilst taking a photo, a woman drove past and round the corner whilst texting on her phone. I an incensed - and there's nothing I can do. I'm just glad she wasn't passing while we were on our bikes. Lots more hills to negotiate but fabulous scenery and 'quiet lanes' - the signposts say so. The one we went on (for about 4 miles) went up and down steeply but we only saw 2 cars and no people. We stopped for a 'brew with a view' - fired up the stove and had a cuppa and energy bar. Got back onto more travelled roads just before Newton. We came over the crest of a hill and it was like getting to the apex of a roller coaster. I was poised at the top of this tremendous hill where I couldn't see the bottom because of the steepness. My heart was in my mouth and then . . . a a a a h h h ! ! ! fly down the hill at top speed - exhilaration! (to be contd)
