Thursday 2 September

Had breakfast in the hostel kitchen. We'd bought a fruit loaf yesterday, so toasted that. Saw James and heard that Simon had been sick all night. They were still going to carry on though. Said goodbye to Betty (hostel warden) and left at 8.30 (Betty brought £5 over to the pub last night from Bob, a warden who was impressed with what we were doing - thanks Bob). Huge hill to climb almost immediately. It's a glorious day - fabulous riding. One of those 'good to be alive' days. Great views across the fells. Went up another 'quiet road' and into Gisburn forest. We went past Stocks reservoir which was very low. Climbed up to over 1100 feet after that - what a struggle! We had to push up the last little bit, but what a reward! Fabulous views, then a long, long downhill across the fells. No traffic - just sheep. Finally popped back onto the main road just before Ingleton. What a shock after the quietness of the fells. The 'A' road was horrible, narrow and lots of traffic. Stopped in Ingleton for a tea/coffee and a sticky (carrot cake and Yorkshire sticky tea loaf with cheese). Passed our 500 mile mark - YIPPEE! Turned off the main road at Kirkby Lonsdale - a much quieter road. Got to Sedbergh around 2pm and headed for the campsite. They don't take tents anymore. Hmmm. Sign's not been changed. Back into town. Went to the pub - no room, next pub - ditto. Checked B&Bs. No luck. Went to the Tourist Information office. Got given a list of accommodation and told to phone around. Got a room at Holmecroft. Very comfortable. Got here at 2.20 pm, however the lady of the house (Sue) not back until 4pm. Went to the 'hOwGILLs' bakery and tea rooms and had a delicious parsnip and apple soup and a strawberry cream scone. Peter had a 'rustic tea'. Another one for the recommended list. After all the backwards and forwardsing the final mileage was 36 miles.
Current height 380 feet
max height 1,377 feet
Ascent 2,650
Cora: will look out for Dave
