Tuesday 31 August
Thanks to James for the delicious pork roast dinner (with loads of veg, as requested :-)) last night. Also to Sarah for the enormous cooked breakfast this morning and the supplies she sent us off with, although I have to tell you Sarah that the Aeros didn't survive the journey! They melted :-( We set off at 9.15 out of Knutsford and were soon onto quiet country roads. However, this didn't last. It was just one town after another. We crossed over the M56 then the M62. Leigh had cycle lanes marked at the side of the road, but then cars were parked most of the way along so that was a waste of time. Peter had a 'moment' - he got slightly upset with a motorist who nearly ran us down rather than let us move into the right turn lane approaching traffic lights, even though the lights were on red and Peter had given plenty of warning with hand signals. Out of the corner of my eye I think I saw a subtle change of the hand signal ... Carrying on I was on the lookout for a cafe, but there were none. Finally came across a fish and chip shop (takeaway) in Blackrod so we stopped and just had a couple of drinks. They kindly let me use their loo and we sat outside to have our drinks. A man wandered over and started chatting (Jimmy). He was very interesting as he'd been all over the world and told us all about it. Set off again. Stopped in a quiet park in Adlington for our sandwiches that Sarah had made - quiet that is until we got there. Suddenly about 6 young girls appeared out of nowhere and ran round screaming and shouting to each other for the whole time we were there. Just as we finished our lunch, they disappeared again! Starting to climb again now and moving into some pleasant countryside. Views downhill to both sides of us. The road we're on runsparallel and close to the M61. We can see the Winterhill mast to our right. Finally get to our stopping place for the night - Wheelton - only to discover that none of the pubs there did accommodation. CRISIS! (to be contd ...)
