Drove down to Reading yesterday, as I had a 4x4 off-road day arranged for today (60th birthday present from the kids). Had the Copthorne Hotel booked for 2 nights so we could drive down Friday, I could spend the day doing the driving today, then drive back tomorrow. I got a phone call from the company last week to say there was no instructor for today, could I change it to tomorrow. I agreed (as I had the hotel booked) then found out it was just going to be me and it would be just two hours one-to-one. Not sure that I'm happy with that. Anyway, we have come down, brought the bikes, and spent today cycling. We started off cycling a mile up the road to get breakfast from Judge's Cafe. Breakfast in the hotel was going to cost £16.75 per person!! A good breakfast and welcome from the people who own the cafe and it cost £9 for both of us for a full English plus a tea and coffee. The roads initially were minor roads, but very busy - too many people live down here!! - but then we got onto the Kennet and Avon canal towpath and that was much better. Called in at a pub for lunch. Got back to the hotel about 3.30 after cycling 34 miles at a leisurely pace. Great use being made of the canal. Lots of narrow boats; people walking, cycling; running, fishing. Weather sunny with a bit of cloud.
Total mileage: Peter 33.2 miles; me 34.2 miles (I did a bit more down the road to get the mileage up to 34!)
